That changes you to a different mode and the commands that you will have available are going to be different. If you want to configure, you have to go into global configuration mode at least, and you can accomplish that by typing configure terminal. You go from user to privilege using the enable command and then from there you can only do monitoring and maintenance commands.
Remember, exact modes have two sublevels: user and privileged. The first step in configuring a router is to be located at privileged mode. We will see configuration examples for basic interface components including IP addresses and then an overview of the show commands to verify proper configuration and operations.
